50% VG / 50% PG E-liquid

50% VG / 50% PG refers to the ratio of an e-liquid’s base ingredients: Vegetable Glycerin (VG) and Propylene Glycol (PG). A 50/50 ratio is more suitable for smaller pod or starter vape kits. 

50/50 e-liquid contains an equal balance of VG and PG, making it a great choice for pod kits and other low powered vapes. Nic salts are commonly manufactured in 50/50 ratios, although some nicotine-free shortfills and freebase nicotine e-liquids can also be purchased with 50% VG and 50% PG. 

Vegetable Glycerin (VG)

Vegetable Glycerine is a thick, syrup-like, clear ingredient used in vape juices that has a slightly sweet taste. Its main purpose in e-liquid is to provide the vapour clouds produced by vaping - high VG e-liquids are favoured by sub-ohm vapers and cloud chasers for this reason. Derived from vegetable fats, VG is a natural substance also used in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical products. Because of its thickness, e-liquids with a high amount of VG require more power at heat to turn into vapour. These high VG e-liquids are also more likely to leave a gunky residue on your vape coils, so they might require you to clean your vape more often. 

Propylene Glycol (PG)

Propylene Glycol is the thinner, clear, and flavourless substance in e-liquids. Used in vape juice to carry the flavourings, Propylene Glycol also has a range of uses in foods such as ice cream, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Because PG is thinner than VG, e-liquids with a lot of PG don't require as much power and heat for vaping. Any e-liquid with a PG percentage of 50% or higher is generally regarded as a high-PG e-liquid.

What type of vaping are 50/50 e-liquids suited to?

50/50 e-liquids or high-PG e-liquids are perfect for mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping in pod kits, disposable vapes, and vape pens. These vape liquids don't require much power to vapourise and can therefore be used even in small vapes with fairly weak batteries such as a pre-filled disposable. If you're a fan of direct-to-lung (DTL) vaping, we recommend opting for a high VG formulation in a higher powered vaping device. 

What's the difference between nic salts, freebase nicotine e-liquids, and shortfills?

Nicotine salts, also known as nic salts or salt nic, are a new type of vape liquid that has grown increasingly popular over recent years. These contain nicotine in the form in which it is found in the tobacco plant, with added benzoic or citric acid to improve absorption into the body at low temperatures. Favoured by vapers who enjoy faster nicotine absorption, a smoother throat hit, and an MTL vaping style, nic salts are the most common type of 50/50 e-liquid. 

Freebase nicotine e-liquids are the classic type of vape juice. These contain nicotine that has been 'freebased' - the process of adding alkaline ammonia to deprotonate the nicotine and allow it to be better absorbed by the body.

In May 2017,  the Tobacco Products Directive introduced regulations preventing the sale of nicotine-containing e-liquids in bottles bigger than 10ml in the UK and EU. To get around this issue, many vape juice manufacturers started selling shortfills. These are nicotine-free e-liquids in bottles of 50ml, 100ml or larger, which can be mixed with a separate nicotine shot to achieve your desired nicotine levels. Allowing vapers to buy larger quantities of vape juice at once, e-liquid shortfills tend to have higher concentrations of VG and are favoured by sub-ohm vapers. 

What nicotine strength do I need?

When you're first choosing a vape liquid, it can be hard to figure out what nicotine strength you need. Everybody is different and therefore it can take some trial and error to find your perfect nicotine strength. 

In general, if you are a very light or social smoker, 3mg nicotine should be sufficient. For smokers of around 10 a day, 6mg nicotine strength is appropriate. If you used to smoke a pack a day, 12mg nicotine is a great choice, while if you smoked any more than that, 18mg nicotine strength might be what you need. 

Keep in mind that most disposable vapes contain 20mg nicotine salts, meaning that vapers should be careful not to consume too much nicotine at once.

What sort of throat hit does a 50/50 vape juice provide?

E-liquids with equal amounts of VG and PG or a higher amount of PG than VG provide a stronger throat hit. This makes them a great choice for anyone who is switching from smoking to vaping or simply enjoys a strong throat hit from their vape.
